Badness of any person is...

Badness of any person is
what you look like.
Reflect well on the pure heart!
- The pure heart is the Sun and the Moon

Althought the upstream is...

Although the upstream is
the end of clear stream,
its water get roiled
by the boats that go in this world

水上は清き流れのすゑなれど
   世渡る舟に水のにごれる

Some lives float by abandoning thier bodies...

Even though some lives would float
by abandoning their bodies
in crossing the river of this world,
sad are the bodies that
care only about the boat

身を捨てて浮かむ瀬もある世渡りに
    舟のみおしむ身こそかなしき
(お歌第180号)

Abandon everything

I am with a heart
that wants to abandon
my body and self.
O! I want to abandon
even that heart!
(Verse No. 185)

身も我もすてむと思ふ心なる
   その心をもすてまほしさよ
(お歌第185号)

Becoming the one and only sincerity

Abandoning all my body, self and heart,
will I become
the one and only sincerity of
the Heaven and the Earth!

身も我も心もすてて天つちの
   たつたひとつの誠ばかりに

In the roundness withtout an end

The person who has 
a round heart in the roundness
resides in the roundness
without an end

まるき中に丸き心をもつ人は
   かぎりしられぬ○き中なり

Anything will be still not enough always!

Living in this world saying,
"It is still not enough, it still is not enough!"


you will find anything still not enough always

まだたらぬまだたらぬとて世に住めば

Nothing is more fun than being lost!

Nothing is more fun than being lost!
Without being lost, there is no fun.

迷ひほど世に面白きことぞなき
   迷ひなければ楽しみもなし

Brothers of sincerity

Nothing in this world is more precious than sincerity.
Just with sincerity, all the people around the four seas 
can be brothers!

誠ほど世にありがたきものはなし
   誠一つで四海兄弟(けいてい)

Seeing with borrowed light under the rising Sun...

Not knowing the Sun
even though being born in
the Land of the Rising Sun,
they have to see
with the borrowed light lit 
on branches and leaves

日の本に生まれながらに日を知らず
   枝葉にともすひをかりて見る

Appearance of harvests

There are many springs that
flowers bloom but bring no fruits.
How magnificent is
the autumn's appearance
that brings harvests
when the time is ripe!

花咲きて実らぬ春のおほかりき
   時きてみのる秋のよそほい

Stay alert of clouds and fogs!

Clear away, clear away!
But even after many attempts of
clearing away,
stay alert of clouds and fogs!

はらへどもまたはらへどもはらへども
    油断のならぬかかる雲きり

Emerging clouds are so hard to clear away!

Clear away, clear away!
But even after many attempts of
clearing away,
the emerging clouds are
so hard to clear away!

祓へどもまた祓へども祓へども
    祓ひがたきはいずる雲かな

Facing the Sun everyday...

Facing the Sun everyday
I feel from my heart
the gladness that
I have an everlasting life

When every wish comes true
according to my heart's desire,
I feel grateful
asleep or awake!

to the Heaven,
how gladdening 
the Heaven's giving is!

何事も心のままにかなひなば

Whatever I face is blessed

When I live in this world
with gratitude to anything,

everything is the work of the Heaven,
nothing makes me suffer and
nothing toils me.

Nothing is better 
than just to enjoy
the heart of the heaven
asleep or awake!

何事もただ楽しむにしくはなし

Sincere is your heart

Sincere is your heart that thinks everything is
of the heaven!
(Verse No. 147)

何事も天のものとぞ思ひつる
   君の心ぞまことなるらむ

A sin is made when...

A sin is made when a man
thinks as if any thing were
of his own creation even though
everything is of the heaven.
(Verse No. 164)

何事も天のものにてあるものを
   わがもの顔でつくる罪とが

Looks like a house that does not shake...

With a thick pillar of heart standing
a heart looks like a house that
does not shake
for thousands of generations!

つき立てる心の柱太ければ
   千代もうごかぬ家と見えける

The rising sun dissolves the regret of the sin...

It indeed is the rising sun that
dissolves the regret of the sin
that formed among dews and frosts.

露霜にむすべる罪の悔しさを

The moon has already set...

What a pity to sleep until the time
when the moon has already set
and the sun is already up!

Changeless

In the light of Heaven-illuminating Goddess
should there be any difference between
the times of powerful gods
and today!
(Verse No. 14)

天照らす君の光は千早振る
   神代も今もかわらざらまし

I am the beginning of the Way!



Now at the dawn when
the moon sets and
the sun rises,
I indeed am the beginning
of the Way!
(Verse No. 133)

月は入り日の今いづるあけぼのに
    我こそ道のはじめなりけれ
(お歌第133号)

The world is not coming to the end!

What a pity it is to think
the world is coming to the end
even though the world is the same
in the times of powerful gods or now!
(Verse No. 123)

千早振る神代も今も同じ世を
   みな末の世と思ふあはれさ
(お歌第123号) 

O the true children of gods, don't distress your parents!

O the true children of powerful gods
who were born of those gods,
do not bring distress to your parents!

千早振る神の生み出す生みの子よ
    親の心をいたましむるな

All depends on your heart

This is the world where
enjoyment or suffering
all depends on your heart.
(Verse No. 120)

楽しむもまた苦しむも
   かつてしだいの浮き世なるらむ

The dlight of the heaven and the earth

That any delight is mine,
won't I think
because any delight is just 
of the heaven and the earth.

楽しみもわが楽しみと思ふまじ
    ただ天つちのたのしみにして

Just go on living all with the heart of enjoyment

To keep or to discard
won't I think.
I will just go on living all with
the heart of enjoyment.

たもつともまたすつるとも思ふまじ
    ただ楽しみの心ばかりに

The heart of the person who confronts you is a mirror...

The heart of the person 
who confronts you is a mirror;
it constantly reflects 
who and how you are.

立ち向かふ人の心は鏡なり
   おのが姿を移してやみん

Appearance does vary according to each person
but the origin of heart is one.

姿こそみなそれぞれにかはれども

A wise person's practice

To nurture the invisible one heart,
this is the practice of a wise person.

姿なき心一つを養ふは
   かしこき人の修行なるらむ

Let the invisible heart live!

If you let the invisible heart live and use it,
its effect will fill across the universe!

Three-year-old again

As one of the disciples sang celebrating of his sixtieth year (the completion of one big Chinese zodiac cycle) that

In the blessing of the heaven and the earthgrows the hearts of gods
in me that becomes a three-year-toddler
again from this year on:

It is indeed a big blessing to become
a three-year-old toddler again from this year on;
the blessing will even be bigger
if you could become a baby again!

門人還暦の寿に、

ことしより三つ子になりて天つちのめぐみにそだつ神のふところ

と 詠みいでたれば

ことしより三つ子となるもありがたし
   赤子となればなほありがたきかな

Think only about this moment!

Think only about this moment!
Yesterday is already gone and
tomorrow is still unknown.

さしあたることのみ思へ人はただ
   きのうはすぎるあるは知られず

Being all mouth, being all ears!

Come here and
listen being all ears
to the Way that I preach
being all mouth!

"When my heart preaches, departing my own heart, it is only my mouth that preaches.  At such a time, the sermon comes out somehow naturally of my mouth in the absence of the ego.  It means that the Heaven makes me preach.  And when the listener also listens only with his ears, there truly is oneness."

ここに来て口ばかりにてとく道を
   耳ばかりにてきき給へ

「心はおのが心をはなれて説くときは、口ばかりなり。そのとき何となく無心の所にいづるなり。これすなはち天のいはしむるなり。また、きく人も耳ばかりにてきき給はば、まことに一体なり。」

The heart is nothing but
the divine life force of
the heaven and the earth
that has departed from
being and non-being

   有無をはなれし中のいきもの

The wise are...

The wise are those who
live wholeheartedly;
the fools are those who
die.
(Gobun No. 87)

心から生きる人こそかしこけれ
   死ぬる人こそあほうなりけれ

I forget my advancing age...

I forget my advancing age
when I believe from the heart
that I have the life everlasting!
(Verse No. 109)

心から生き通しぞと思ひなば
   年の寄るのも忘れけるかな
(お歌第109号)

Into the dark...

O, the people's hearts,
go into the dark
rather than into darkness!
In the sky of sincerity
does the moon reside!
(Gobun No. 257)

"The dark means one's self and it is great arrogance that one thinks even a little light enters his own self.  If one strives for the faith, discarding his own wisdom, in that, he will certainly feel as if precious dawn should break.  Discarding one's wisdom - that is the way of the Way."

闇(くら)きよりくらきに入よ人心
     月は誠の空にこそすめ
(御文第257号)

「くらきと申す心は、自身のことと申す心にて、まことに少しでも我に明かり入り候と存じ候へば大なる慢心なり。いよいよわが知恵を捨てて信心をいたし候へば、その中に、まことに有り難き夜の明けたるごとくのことあり。いよいよわが知恵を捨つるこそ、道の道なり。」

Clouds and fogs,
the natural wind blows away.

upon the understanding of
the self that does not exist.

The blooms of the endless Way

Even though there is a saying"Yesterday's blossoms are today's dream,"
today's storm disturbs me.
(Verse No. 194)

Thinking again, composed another verse:
If the blooms of this world is blown away,
leave them as they are!
The blooms of the endless Way
will I make bloom
under the heaven and in the earth!
(Verse No. 195)

昨日(きぞ)の花けふの夢とはききつれど
   今の嵐はうらめしきかな
(お歌第194号)

また思ひ直して一首
世の花は散らばや散れよ天つちに
    つきせぬ道の花を咲かせむ
(お歌第195号)

Within the Heaven-illuminating Goddess, anyway...

Celebrating your departure to the East (Edo), I say:
In the end of the East where you go
or in this village,
do we live within
the Heaven-illuminating Goddess,
anyway.

東(あづま)へ旅だち給ひしを祝し奉りてかくはべりぬ
君が行く東のすゑもこのさとも
   天照る神のみうちなるらむ
